TDIU benefits go beyond the monthly check. Veterans approved for Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability receive VA disability at the 100% rate — about $3,938 a month tax-free in 2026 — plus access to many of the same benefits available to schedular 100% veterans.
What you get with TDIU
Cash benefits
- Monthly compensation at the 100% rate. $3,831.30 for a single veteran (Dec 2025 COLA-adjusted), more with dependents.
- Tax-free income. Like all VA disability, TDIU pay isn't taxed federally or by most states.
- Concurrent receipt for military retirees rated 50%+ combined — you keep both VA pay and military retirement.
Healthcare
- VA Priority Group 1 — free care for all conditions.
- CHAMPVA for dependents — if rated permanent & total (P&T).
- Free VA dental care for service-connected dental conditions.
Education benefits for family
- Chapter 35 / DEA — up to 36 months of education benefits for spouse and dependent children, but only if rated permanent & total.
Housing
- Property tax exemptions in many states — varies by state.
- Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant — up to $117,014 in 2026 for severely disabled veterans.
- VA home loan with no funding fee.
State and local benefits
22 states give full property tax exemptions to 100% disabled veterans — TDIU recipients qualify in most of them. See the full state benefits guide.
Commissary, exchange, and MWR access
All VA-rated permanent & total veterans (including TDIU P&T) qualify for unlimited commissary, exchange, and MWR base access.
TDIU vs. schedular 100% benefits
Most benefits are the same. Two key differences:
- Chapter 35 education for family requires P&T status. Some TDIU ratings aren't marked P&T.
- Earned income limits. TDIU recipients must stay below substantially gainful employment (~$15,960 in 2026). Schedular 100% veterans can earn any amount.
Income rules for TDIU recipients
You can still earn money on TDIU — but only up to the federal poverty threshold for a single person (~$15,960 in 2026). Exceptions:
- Marginal employment — earning below the poverty line.
- Protected work environment — sheltered, family business, or significantly accommodated work doesn't count.
How to apply for TDIU benefits
- File VA Form 21-8940.
- Include treatment records and a vocational expert opinion if possible.
- Submit lay statements about how conditions limit work.
- Wait for the VA to mail VA Form 21-4192 to your last employers.
