ROTC cadet rank exists only inside the ROTC unit, and it gives a cadet no authority over anyone in the actual armed forces. In the rank guides we publish here, this is the one structure where insignia and authority come apart. A Cadet Colonel does not outrank a private. The grade describes a job within the cadet battalion for one semester. Nearly every cadet who finishes the program commissions at the same grade, O-1, whatever they wore as a cadet.
Army ROTC Cadet Ranks
Army ROTC uses cadet grades that mirror the commissioned officer ranks, with "Cadet" in front. The structure runs from the smallest leadership job to command of the whole battalion.

Below those, cadets in the first two years hold cadet noncommissioned officer grades, running from Cadet Private through Cadet Sergeant Major. Larger programs use more of the structure than small ones. A battalion of 150 cadets needs more positions filled than a battalion of 30.
Air Force and Naval ROTC Use Different Structures
Each branch runs its own cadet rank system, and they do not translate directly. Air Force ROTC uses cadet officer grades in the same pattern as the Air Force itself, running from Cadet Second Lieutenant up to Cadet Colonel. Cadet airman and cadet noncommissioned officer grades sit below them.
Naval ROTC works differently again, because its students are midshipmen rather than cadets. Naval ROTC uses midshipman grades, and the Marine Corps option within Naval ROTC follows the Marine structure. A student in a Naval ROTC unit heading for a Marine commission and one heading for a Navy commission may hold differently named grades in the same building.

How Cadet Rank Is Assigned
Cadet rank follows the position, and the position is reassigned regularly. The cadre, meaning the active-duty officers and noncommissioned officers who run the program, assign leadership jobs each semester. Rank comes attached to the job. A cadet who commands the battalion this term wears Cadet Colonel. The same cadet running a platoon next term wears Cadet Second Lieutenant.
Selection weighs leadership evaluations, fitness test scores, and academic standing. Performance at the summer field training between the third and fourth years counts heavily too. This is deliberate. The program's job is producing officers, so it rotates people through progressively harder leadership problems and grades them on the results.
It also means cadet rank is a poor signal of anything to outsiders. A strong cadet may hold a modest grade this semester simply because someone else has the command billet.
What Cadet Rank Does Not Do
Cadet rank carries no authority in the armed forces. A cadet cannot give a lawful order to an enlisted member, cannot expect a salute from one, and holds no position in the military chain of command. Cadets are students in a training program, and the courtesies they render inside the unit are part of that training rather than a military relationship.
Cadets doing summer training alongside real units learn this quickly. A Cadet Colonel arriving at a field exercise is, to the sergeants running it, a college student learning the job. Learn that early. It is one of the more useful things the program teaches.
Prior-service cadets sit in an unusual spot. A soldier who enlisted, served, and then entered ROTC holds a real enlisted rank alongside a cadet grade, and the enlisted rank governs outside the classroom.
What You Commission As
Almost every ROTC graduate commissions as an O-1, the first officer grade. In the Army, Air Force, Space Force, and Marine Corps that is a second lieutenant. In the Navy and Coast Guard it is an ensign. Cadet rank does not carry over. A Cadet Colonel and a Cadet Second Lieutenant commissioning in the same class start at the same grade and the same pay.
Prior enlisted service does change the money. A graduate with at least four years of prior enlisted or warrant officer service is paid at the O-1E rate, which is higher than standard O-1 pay. Our officer pay chart carries both 2026 figures.
Cadet rank does affect the branch and assignment competition. Performance in leadership positions feeds the national order of merit list, which helps determine which branch a graduating cadet is assigned. Holding a demanding billet and doing well in it changes where you end up. It does not change what you are paid.
Junior ROTC Ranks Are a Separate System
Junior ROTC is a high school program and runs its own cadet rank structure, which does not connect to the college one. Each branch sets its own Junior ROTC grades, and individual schools organize their units differently. A Cadet Lieutenant Colonel at one high school and one at another may be running very different jobs.
Finishing Junior ROTC gives you no standing in a college ROTC program. Everyone starts at the beginning. What it can do is qualify you to enlist at an advanced pay grade if you go that route instead, which is worth real money in the first two years. It also helps in a way ranks do not capture. Junior ROTC graduates arrive already knowing drill, customs, and how a uniform inspection works, so the first semester of college ROTC is less of a shock.
Cadet Rank Insignia
Cadet insignia resemble the real thing without matching it. Anyone in uniform can tell the difference at a glance. Army ROTC cadets wear the same shape of officer insignia in a distinct finish, alongside the cadet's own unit markings. Air Force ROTC takes a comparable approach on its own uniform.
The practical rule for a new cadet is that the insignia belongs to the billet rather than to you. It goes back when the position rotates at the end of the term, which is one more reminder that the structure is a training rotation rather than a career ladder.
Who This Structure Frustrates
Cadets who expect rank to track seniority find the rotation frustrating. A grade can go down next semester through no fault of their own. Prior-service cadets find it hardest of all, having spent years in a system where rank was earned and kept.
The grade is a role assignment for one term. The evaluation written about how you performed follows you into the branch competition.
What Would Change This Answer
Cadet rank structures are set by each branch's ROTC command and change rarely, so this is stable content. A branch reorganizing its cadet grades, or the creation of a Space Force ROTC track with its own structure, would be the events that alter it. If the proposed United States Space Academy is established, its cadet structure would be defined by the commission planning it.
