Military basic pay rose 5.2% on January 1, 2024. That raise put an E-5 with six years of service at $3,601.80 a month and a brand-new O-1 at $3,826.20. Every rate on this 2024 military pay chart is transcribed from the Department of Defense monthly basic pay table effective 1 January 2024. That table stayed in force through December 31 of that year. Congress authorized the year's pay in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024. The pay table itself is headed "FY24 NDAA 5.2% increase."
Basic pay is identical across all six services. An Army sergeant, a Navy petty officer second class and a Marine sergeant at the same grade and the same years of service were paid the same figure in 2024.
2024 Enlisted Pay Chart (E-1 to E-9)
Enlisted basic pay in 2024 ran from $1,865.10 a month for an E-1 with under four months of service to $9,891.30 for an E-9 with 38 or more years. Column headings are completed years of service, so the "6" column holds the rate for a member who has passed six years but not eight.

The E-1 row splits in two, and reprinted charts routinely drop the lower half. A recruit under four months of service was paid $1,865.10. The rate stepped up to $2,017.20 once they passed four months. No later longevity step raises E-1 pay above that, so the row runs flat across the whole table.
Two other rows stop early. E-4 pay froze at $3,197.40 after six years, and E-5 pay froze at $4,076.40 after 12. A member who stayed in either grade past those points saw nothing more from longevity, so only a promotion raised the number.
2024 Warrant Officer Pay Chart (W-1 to W-5)
Warrant officer basic pay in 2024 started at $3,739.80 a month for a W-1 under two years and reached $12,269.10 for a W-5 with 38 or more years. The Department of Defense table publishes no W-5 rate below 20 years of service.

Commissioned officer basic pay in 2024 started at $3,826.20 a month for an O-1 under two years. O-1 pay reached $4,814.70 at three years and never rose again, because the grade has no longevity step past that point.

Most officer career math starts at O-3. An O-3 with four years earned $6,806.10 a month, and an O-3 with eight years earned $7,490.70. Four more years in the same grade were worth $684.60 a month.
Officers with Prior Enlisted Service (O-1E, O-2E, O-3E)
An officer who commissioned after more than four years of enlisted or warrant service was paid a higher rate at the same grade. At six years of total service an O-1E earned $5,141.10 while an O-1 at the same point earned $4,814.70, a difference of $326.40 every month.

The E rates apply only while the officer holds O-1, O-2 or O-3. On promotion to O-4 the member moves to the standard O-4 row and the prior-enlisted premium ends.
Two Statutory Caps Froze the Top of the 2024 Table
Basic pay for O-7 through O-10 stopped at $18,491.70 a month in 2024, and basic pay for O-6 and below stopped at $15,000.00. Those two ceilings are Level II and Level V of the Executive Schedule, the federal civilian pay scale. They sit on top of the military pay formula rather than inside it.
The Department of Defense table carries a third note that explains where the ceiling landed. The Executive Schedule increase for 2024 was held to 4.6% by the Ethics Reform Act of 1989, while military basic pay rose 5.2%. The cap rose more slowly than the table underneath it. That is why the O-9 row climbs to $18,357.30 at 22 years and then flattens at $18,491.70 from 24 years on. The same ceiling is why the O-10 row shows one number at every longevity step.
A flat row at the top of the chart is not a typo. The formula kept producing higher numbers for those grades, and the member was paid the cap instead.
2024 Rates Past 26 Years of Service
Seven grades were still earning longevity increases past 26 years of service in 2024: O-8, O-7, O-6, W-5, W-4, E-9 and E-8. Every other row had already reached its final rate, so its 26-year figure carried straight through to 40 years. The O-9 and O-10 rows appear below for reference and sit at the $18,491.70 cap the whole way.

What the 2024 Table Left Out
Basic pay was one line of a 2024 paycheck. Basic Allowance for Housing and Basic Allowance for Subsistence were paid separately, were untaxed, and appear nowhere in these tables. Housing allowance also varied by duty ZIP code, grade and dependent status, so two E-6s on identical basic pay could take home several hundred dollars a month apart.
Special and incentive pays sat on top of all of it: flight pay, sea pay, hazardous duty pay, dive pay, language pay, and enlistment or retention bonuses. The basic allowance for housing guide covers how that rate is set.
How 2024 Compares with 2025 and 2026
Basic pay has moved three times since the 2024 table expired. Each change stacked on the one before it, so a 2024 figure understates the current rate by more than any single percentage.
- January 1, 2025: a 4.5% across-the-board raise for every grade.
- April 1, 2025: a separate targeted raise of roughly 10% for E-1 through E-4 only, authorized by Section 601 of the following year's defense authorization act. Grades above E-4 got nothing extra.
- January 1, 2026: a 3.8% across-the-board raise on top of the April 2025 baseline.
Compounding the two across-the-board raises does not work for E-1 through E-4. A 2024 E-3 rate cannot be carried forward to 2026 by applying 4.5% and then 3.8%, because the April 2025 adjustment moved those four grades onto a different base first. Who Looks Up 2024 Basic Pay
Several benefit calculations use basic pay rates from years that have already closed. Four cases account for most 2024 lookups.
- Retired pay under High-3. Retired pay is figured on the average of a member's highest 36 months of basic pay. Anyone who retired in 2025 or 2026 has 2024 months sitting inside that average, so a 2024 cell is part of the check they draw for life.
- Late promotions and corrected longevity steps. A promotion or years-of-service increase processed months after its effective date is paid at the rate in force for those months. A 2024 correction pays 2024 money.
- Dividing retired pay in a divorce. A court order splitting military retired pay is usually written against the member's grade and years of service on a fixed date, which can fall inside 2024.
- Checking a 2024 W-2 or Leave and Earnings Statement. Reconciling a tax document against what should have been paid takes the table that was actually in effect for those months.
2024 Drill Pay for Guard and Reserve Members
One reserve drill period pays 1/30 of monthly basic pay, and a standard drill weekend is four periods. Multiply any cell in the tables above by 4/30 to get what that grade earned for a weekend in 2024. An E-4 with over four years of service was on $3,197.40 a month, which works out to about $426 for the weekend.
Annual training pays on a different basis. Those days draw the active-duty daily rate of 1/30 of monthly basic pay per day, so a 14-day period in 2024 paid roughly $1,492 for the same E-4. The reserve drill pay chart runs the same math on current rates.
