Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI) lets you keep your SGLI coverage after separation — up to $500,000 in 2026. It's the only post-service VA life insurance available to all veterans, no medical exam required if you apply within 240 days.

What is VGLI?

VGLI is renewable term life insurance offered through the VA to separating service members. It's a continuation of SGLI but with age-based premiums and coverage you choose in $10,000 increments up to $500,000.

VGLI application windows

You have 1 year and 120 days (485 days total) after separation to apply for VGLI. Two windows decide whether you need a medical exam.

Tip: If you have any health issues, apply during the first 240 days while acceptance is guaranteed.

VGLI vs. private term life

For young veterans in good health, private term policies often cost less than VGLI. For older veterans or those with health issues, VGLI's guaranteed acceptance during the first 240 days makes it the most affordable option.
