The VA disability payment schedule 2026 follows one rule: payments land on the first business day of each month, for the benefit earned the month before. A federal holiday or a weekend on the 1st moves that date to the business day before it.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) pays disability compensation in arrears. The deposit that lands this month covers last month's benefit. It goes out on the first business day of the month.

When the 1st falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, VA moves the deposit to the business day right before it. That single rule explains every date in the table below.

How VA Disability Payments Work Each Month

VA disability compensation is a recurring monthly benefit. It is not a lump sum paid once for the year. Every payment corresponds to one calendar month of eligibility, and VA releases it once that month has ended. That is why a new claimant's first check often lands on an unfamiliar date, since VA is paying for a month that already finished.

Your very first payment works differently from every one after it. VA states that once your decision notice shows at least a 10 percent rating, that first payment arrives within 15 days of the decision. It does not wait for the standard monthly date. Every payment after that first one follows the regular monthly calendar below.

Every Month's VA Disability Payment Date for 2026

The table below lists every 2026 deposit date next to the benefit month it covers. Five of the twelve 2026 dates fall before the 1st because a weekend or a federal holiday sits on that day, based on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) holiday calendar.

The December 2025 row is included because it is the payment sent right before 2026 began, and it is often the one veterans point to when a date looks off. Every other row runs through the full 2026 calendar year.

This table covers disability compensation only. The Post-9/11 GI Bill's Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) runs on its own separate schedule tied to monthly enrollment certification. That schedule does not follow the calendar above. Do not assume the two land on the same day.

The 2026 COLA and Your Monthly Payment Amount

The cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2026 is 2.8 percent, effective December 1, 2025. That increase is baked into every payment on the schedule above. It changed the dollar amount. It did not change the deposit date.

For a single veteran with a 100 percent rating and no dependents, the 2026 monthly rate is $3,938.58. That is $107.28 more than the 2025 rate for the same rating and dependent status. The 2.8 percent COLA accounts for the full increase. Your own payment depends on your rating percentage and how many dependents you claim, so that figure will not match every deposit. See the full 2026 rate table on our VA Disability Percentages & Combined Rating Table page for every rating percentage and dependent count.

Some veterans receive more than the standard percentage-based rate. VA pays Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) on top of the base rate for specific severe disabilities, such as the loss of a limb or a need for aid and attendance. That additional amount follows the same monthly schedule above and simply adds to the deposit. Our VA SMC Rates 2026 guide covers those higher rates in full.

Payment Date vs. Effective Date

Your payment date and your claim's effective date are not the same thing. The effective date is when VA decided your benefits began, often the date you filed or a date tied to your discharge. The payment date is simply the day the deposit lands in your account, following the monthly schedule above no matter when your claim was approved.

This distinction explains a common surprise for newly rated veterans. A claim approved in March, with an effective date back in January, still moves onto the regular monthly deposit schedule from the approval forward. The gap between January and March gets paid separately, as VA disability back pay. It is not folded into a bigger regular check.

What Can Delay a VA Disability Payment

Most delays trace back to one of four causes.

What we see readers get wrong most often is checking their account before the bank finishes posting a government deposit, then assuming VA missed the date when the money lands a few hours later that same day.

How to Confirm Your Own VA Disability Payment Date

VA.gov's payment history page shows the real date and amount VA sent to your account each month. Sign in, open your profile, and look under payment history to check your last deposit. That page also lists the specific deduction reason and dollar amount whenever VA withholds part of a payment for an overpayment offset. If the date does not match the table above, check for a bank holiday on your end first, then confirm your direct deposit details are current.

Save the VA disability payment schedule 2026 dates above, then check your own rate on the percentage table before your next deposit lands.
