Why Early Outreach Matters for Veterans
Many veterans wait until they are in crisis before reaching out for help. The Veterans Crisis Line (VCL) is now urging veterans to call before things reach a breaking point. This shift in approach aims to connect veterans with mental health support and VA resources early, which can reduce risk and improve long-term outcomes.
Early intervention is especially important for those who may be struggling with PTSD, depression, or anxiety. By reaching out before a crisis, veterans can access counseling, peer support, and referrals to VA healthcare services, including treatment covered by TRICARE or VA benefits.
How the Veterans Crisis Line Works
The VCL is available 24/7 by calling 988 and pressing 1, texting 838255, or chatting online at veteranscrisisline.net. You do not need to be enrolled in VA healthcare or receiving VA benefits to use the service. Family members and friends can also contact the VCL on behalf of a veteran.
When you reach out, trained responders—many of whom are veterans themselves—listen and provide confidential support. They can connect callers with local VA resources, schedule appointments, and offer immediate crisis intervention if needed.
Connecting to VA Benefits and Care
Early contact with the VCL can help veterans access a range of VA benefits and services. Responders can refer you to VA mental health clinics, help you understand eligibility for VA disability compensation, and guide you through the process of filing a claim. For more on this, visit our VA claims hub or see our explainers on mental health benefits.
Veterans struggling with service-connected mental health conditions may be eligible for disability ratings under 38 CFR § 4.130. If you need help calculating your combined rating, use our VA disability rating calculator.
What to Do If You Need Help
- Call the Veterans Crisis Line at 988 (press 1) or text 838255, even if you just need to talk.
- Ask about local VA mental health services and request a referral or appointment.
- Discuss your eligibility for VA benefits and get help starting a claim if your mental health is service-connected.
- Share information with family—they can call the VCL for guidance on supporting you.
There is no wrong time to reach out. The VCL is not just for emergencies—it's a resource for ongoing support and connection to VA care.
