What Is VA Telehealth and Who Can Use It?

VA telehealth is a set of virtual health care services that let veterans connect with VA providers by video, phone, or secure messaging. If you are enrolled in VA health care, you are eligible for telehealth services. This includes primary care, mental health, and chronic condition management, such as chronic pain.

Telehealth is available nationwide through the VA, and you do not need to live near a VA hospital to use it. For more details on VA health care eligibility, visit our explainers section.

What Chronic Pain Services Are Covered by VA Telehealth?

VA telehealth covers a range of services for veterans with chronic pain. These include pain assessments, medication management, physical therapy consultations, and referrals to pain specialists. According to 38 CFR § 17.38, medically necessary outpatient care—including telehealth—must be provided to eligible veterans.

  • Pain management plans: Develop or adjust treatment with your provider.
  • Physical therapy: Get home exercise guidance and follow-up sessions.
  • Mental health support: Address pain-related anxiety or depression.
  • Medication reviews: Discuss prescriptions and side effects.

Some services may require you to visit a local clinic for labs or imaging, but most follow-ups can be handled virtually.

How to Start VA Telehealth for Chronic Pain

To begin, contact your VA primary care team or local VA medical center. You can call the main VA number at 1-877-222-VETS (8387) or use the VA online scheduling tool. Ask for a telehealth appointment for chronic pain management.

You will need a device with internet access, such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer. The VA provides technical support and, in some cases, can loan devices to veterans who do not have them. Download the VA Video Connect app if your provider uses it for video visits.

What to Expect During a VA Telehealth Visit

During your telehealth appointment, your provider will review your pain history, current symptoms, and medications. They may demonstrate exercises, adjust your treatment plan, or refer you to a specialist. All notes and prescriptions are added to your VA medical record, just like an in-person visit.

If you need help with setup or have questions about privacy, the VA telehealth help desk is available at 1-866-651-3180. For more on managing your health and benefits, visit our VA claims and disability ratings hubs.

Telehealth and TRICARE: What Retirees and Families Should Know
