What Is the VA Disability Compensation COLA?

Every year, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) adjusts disability compensation rates to keep up with inflation. This annual increase is called the Cost-of-Living Adjustment, or COLA. The adjustment is based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as measured by the Social Security Administration. For 2026, the new rates take effect on December 1.

COLA ensures your VA disability payments maintain their purchasing power, even as costs for essentials like food, housing, and healthcare rise. This update affects all veterans receiving VA disability compensation under 38 CFR Part 3, Subpart A.

How Much Will Your VA Disability Payment Increase?

The exact percentage of the COLA increase is announced each October. For 2026, check the latest rates on the VA disability ratings hub. For example, if the COLA is 3.2%, a veteran receiving $1,000 monthly would see their payment rise to $1,032 starting with the December payment.

  • New rates apply to all monthly payments issued after December 1, 2026.
  • COLA applies to all disability ratings, from 10% to 100%.
  • If you receive additional allowances (e.g., for dependents), those amounts also increase.

What Should Veterans and Families Do?

First, review your current disability rating and payment amount. You can find this information on your eBenefits or VA.gov profile, or on your most recent VA award letter (VA Form 21-6782). Compare your current payment to the new rates once published.

Next, update your financial plans to account for the increase. If you use direct deposit, no action is needed—payments will adjust automatically. If you receive paper checks, monitor your mail for the updated amount in December.

  • Check your bank statement after December 1 to confirm the new payment.
  • Update your budget to reflect the higher monthly benefit.
  • Contact the VA if you do not see the updated payment by mid-December.

How Does COLA Affect New and Pending VA Claims?

Veterans who file new claims or appeals after December 1, 2026, will receive the updated compensation rates if their claim is approved. This applies to all types of claims, including initial applications (VA Form 21-526EZ), supplemental claims, and appeals.

If your claim is still pending, your retroactive payment will be calculated using the rates in effect for each month covered by your claim. For more information on the claims process, visit our VA claims hub or see our topic explainers.

Where to Find Official 2026 VA Disability Rates

The VA will publish the official 2026 disability compensation rates in late October or early November. You can find these on the VA’s website or our disability ratings hub. Be sure to check for the updated rate tables, which include amounts for each disability percentage and dependent status.

If you have questions about your benefits, contact your local VA office or a Veterans Service Organization (VSO) for assistance.
