Why You Should Avoid Paying for VA Disability Claim Help
Many veterans are approached by individuals or companies offering to assist with VA disability claims—for a fee. However, most veterans do not need to pay for this service. Accredited organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Legion, and state Veterans Service Offices provide free assistance for filing claims and appeals.
According to 38 CFR § 14.629, only VA-accredited representatives, agents, or attorneys can legally charge for certain services, and only after a Notice of Disagreement (NOD) has been filed. Charging fees for help with initial claims is generally not allowed.
How to Check If a Representative Is Accredited
Before you agree to pay anyone for help with your VA claim, verify their accreditation status. The VA maintains a searchable database of accredited representatives, agents, and attorneys. You can access this list on the VA Office of General Counsel website or ask your local VA regional office for help.
- Ask for the individual's full name and accreditation number.

- If they are not listed, do not provide personal information or payment.
When Fees Are Permitted—and When They Aren’t
Under federal law, representatives cannot charge fees for help with initial VA disability claims (see 38 CFR § 14.636). Fees may only be charged for assistance with appeals—specifically, after you have filed a Notice of Disagreement (NOD) using VA Form 10182 or VA Form 20-0996.
