On-Campus VA Claims Support: What’s New for Student Veterans
Student veterans at Denver’s Auraria Campus now have a new resource: Denver Human Services officers are providing in-person help with VA disability and benefits claims. This service brings expert guidance directly to campus, making it easier to start, track, and complete VA claims without needing to travel to a VA office.
While this initiative doesn’t change federal policy, it gives student veterans a practical advantage in navigating the often confusing VA claims process. Officers can answer questions, help fill out paperwork, and explain what evidence to submit for a stronger claim.
What Types of VA Claims Can You File With On-Campus Help?
The officers on Auraria Campus can assist with a range of VA claims, including:
- Initial disability compensation claims (using VA Form 21-526EZ)
- Increased rating claims for worsening conditions
- Dependency claims for adding family members (VA Form 21-686c)
- Education benefits like the Post-9/11 GI Bill
- Appeals and supplemental claims if you’ve been denied
They can also help you gather supporting documents, such as service treatment records or private medical evidence, which are crucial under 38 CFR § 3.159 for a successful claim.
Why In-Person Guidance Matters for VA Claims
Filing a VA claim can be complicated, especially for first-time applicants. Mistakes or missing information can delay your claim or lead to denials. With on-campus help, you get face-to-face answers to your questions about eligibility, required evidence, and claim types. This can increase your chance of getting the right disability rating and back pay.
Denver Human Services officers are trained in VA procedures and can walk you through using the VA claims process, including how to check your claim status and what to do if you receive a decision you disagree with. They can also explain how your disability rating is calculated—see our VA disability rating calculator for more details.
What To Bring and How To Prepare for Your Appointment
Before meeting with a Denver Human Services officer, gather:
- Your DD-214 or separation papers
- Medical records (military and civilian)
- Any previous VA decision letters
- Dependent information (if claiming for family)
- Bank account info for direct deposit
Bring a list of your service-connected conditions and any questions you have. The officer can help you fill out the right forms and ensure you submit everything needed for a timely review.
Next Steps: Filing and Tracking Your VA Claim
After your appointment, your claim will be submitted to the VA. You can track its progress online through VA.gov or by calling 1-800-827-1000. If you receive a decision and disagree with the outcome, ask the on-campus officer about filing a Supplemental Claim (VA Form 20-0995) or a Notice of Disagreement (VA Form 10182).
