Understanding Burn Pit Exposure and Migraines
Many veterans who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other areas were exposed to toxic burn pits. Recent research confirms these veterans face a higher risk of severe, frequent migraines and headaches. Under the PACT Act (Honoring our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act of 2022), the VA recognizes certain conditions, including migraines, as presumptively connected to burn pit exposure. This means you may not need to prove a direct link between your service and your headaches to qualify for benefits.

How to File a VA Disability Claim for Migraines
If you suffer from migraines after burn pit exposure, start by filing VA Form 21-526EZ, Application for Disability Compensation and Related Compensation Benefits. This is the standard form for most VA disability claims. List migraines as a primary condition and note your exposure to burn pits in your statement.
- Form: VA Form 21-526EZ
- Presumptive service connection: PACT Act, 38 CFR § 3.320
- Evidence: Medical records, deployment history, headache diary, buddy statements
Attach any private or VA medical records showing your migraine diagnosis and frequency. If you have a headache log or statements from family or coworkers about your symptoms, include those as well. The VA will likely schedule a Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam to assess your migraines’ impact on your life.
Disability Ratings and Compensation for Migraines
The VA rates migraines under 38 CFR § 4.124a, Diagnostic Code 8100. Ratings range from 0% to 50% based on frequency and severity:
- 50%: Very frequent, completely prostrating, prolonged attacks, severe economic inadaptability
- 30%: Prostrating attacks averaging once a month
- 10%: Prostrating attacks averaging once every two months
- 0%: Less frequent attacks
Monthly payments for a 50% rating (as of 2024) are $1,075.16 for a single veteran, with higher amounts for dependents. Use our VA disability rating calculator to estimate your combined rating if you have multiple conditions.
Coordinating VA and TRICARE Healthcare
Many veterans report fragmented care for migraines and headaches, especially when using both VA and TRICARE. If you’re eligible for both, coordinate your care by:
- Designating a primary care provider (VA or TRICARE)
- Sharing medical records between systems
- Requesting referrals for neurology or headache specialists
If you experience delays or gaps, file a complaint with the VA Patient Advocate or your TRICARE regional office. The PACT Act also mandates improved care coordination for toxic exposure conditions, so ask your VA provider about specialized burn pit clinics or toxic exposure screenings.
